SUNDAY DITTY | IT IS WELL

We sang so many beautiful hymns this morning.
I haven’t always loved hymns.
I used to make fun of them.
You know, put “under the bed” behind every title.
Kids these days…
But then I started reading the background on some favorites.
And actually paying attention to the words.
Then I started to love hymns.
I loved researching them and finding the meaning behind the phrases.
Like this one.
The passion and excitement the writer has for this thought that our sin has been completely taken away.
You can see he can barely hold it in.
It’s a shout:
“Oh the bliss!”
“My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!”

  1. Beautiful! I never really “got” hymns when I was younger either. Maybe being an adult and going around the block once or twice….experiencing the highs and lows in spiritual journey, you can appreciate the artistry, stories and beauty behind hymns!

  2. I love hymns! And recently I've really began to notice how awesome, deep, and true hymns are. It is so interesting to learn the backgrounds on hymns and to learn what the writer was experiencing while writing the hymn. Have you seen the movie Amazing Grace? It's about the writing of the hymn. Great story!

It Is Well is my favorite of all hymns. πŸ™‚
